7 Tips for Taking Care of Your Piano

Deciding to play the piano is not for the lazy person. The instrument you choose requires a financial investment as well as a time commitment. No one has ever been successful at playing any instrument without committing to specific practice sessions and lessons.  In addition to the personal dedication learning to play the piano entails, you must also know how to take care of your piano. To keep your piano functioning well and sounding great, you must put in the effort needed to maintain it.

How to Take Care of a Piano – Piano Care Tips

  • Placement of your piano is important for many reasons, but it makes a big difference in the longevity of your piano, which is susceptible to temperature and humidity. To that end, take time to consider where the most stable indoor climate will be and if you’ll need any accessories such as a humidifier or dehumidifier.
  • Like many electronic or intricate appliances, Pianos can sustain serious damage from spills. To avoid warping the outer case or causing keys to stick together, don’t sit your coffee on the top of your piano. In fact, it’s probably best to keep all liquids a safe distance away.
  • Regular cleaning is very important for your piano. Avoid furniture polish or alcohol based cleaners. For the outside, wiping with a cloth that has been dampened with mild-soapy water is best. Clean the keys with a dry, lint-free cloth.
  • Always cover the keys when the piano isn’t being used. This will help prevent dust from building up between the keys.
  • Avoid using the top of your piano as decorative space. Flower vases can cause condensation. Heavy objects can cause stress to the wood.
  • Play your piano often to keep the inner parts moving freely and prevent dust from settling between the keys and inside the case.
  • Always have your piano tuned and cleaned inside by a professional. Like other home maintenance, this allows minor issues to be handled before they become major challenges.
